What makes Japanese used cars popular in developing markets?

I've noticed that Japanese used cars seem to have a strong reputation in many developing countries, and I'm curious about what everyone thinks is driving that popularity. Whether it's in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, or other regions, these vehicles continue to attract buyers looking for dependable transportation.

One thing I often hear is that cars for sale from Japan tend to offer a good balance between quality and affordability. Of course, there are many other factors that probably influence buying decisions as well.

Some of the reasons that come to mind include:

  • Reliable engineering and long-lasting performance.

  • Regular maintenance standards before vehicles are exported.

  • Wide availability of spare parts for popular models.

  • Better fuel efficiency compared to many older local alternatives.

  • A broad selection of compact cars, SUVs, vans, and hybrid models.

  • Competitive pricing that makes ownership more accessible.

I also think consumer confidence plays a big role. Many buyers have friends or family members who have owned Japanese vehicles for years with relatively few mechanical issues. That kind of real-world experience often influences future purchasing decisions more than advertisements or reviews.

Of course, every market has different import regulations, road conditions, and maintenance costs, so the experience can vary from country to country. Some models may perform exceptionally well in one region but be less practical in another.

For those who have owned or imported Japanese used cars, what has your experience been like? Which factors do you think matter most—reliability, affordability, fuel economy, availability of parts, or something else? I'd love to hear opinions from members in different countries.
